Alloy 42 (Nilo 42 / UNS K94100 / W.Nr. 1.3917) is a binary iron-nickel controlled-expansion alloy containing ~42 % nickel — no cobalt. Its coefficient of thermal expansion is engineered to match soft (lead) glasses, making it a standard material for glass-to-metal seals where its expansion curve fits the glass grade.
Alloy 42 is best known as the dominant material for semiconductor lead frames — stamped or photochemically etched by the billions for IC packaging — and as the low-expansion component of thermostat bimetal strips. As a cobalt-free alternative to Kovar, it offers a significant cost advantage wherever its CTE match is sufficient. Available in strip, sheet, foil, bar, wire, and precision stamped/etched components (lead frames, lids, frames, contact springs).
