Typical Applications

Nickel alloys, with their excellent corrosion resistance, high strength, and high-temperature performance, have become key materials in the chemical and marine engineering sectors. They are widely used in extreme corrosive environments such as reactors, heat exchangers, and subsea pipelines.

Chemical Equipment: Reactors

Chemical reactors are one of the most critical applications of nickel alloys, especially under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions involving strong corrosive media such as sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, and hydrofluoric acid. Nickel alloys (e.g., Hastelloy C-276) perform excellently in both reducing and oxidizing environments. The dense passive film formed by their high chromium and molybdenum content effectively resists pitting and stress corrosion cracking, making them ideal materials for reactor vessels used in the production of acetic acid, acrylonitrile, and other chemical products.

Seawater Desalination Systems: Heat Exchangers

Heat exchangers in seawater desalination systems are in long-term contact with high-temperature concentrated seawater, placing extremely high demands on the material’s resistance to chloride-induced pitting and crevice corrosion. Nickel alloys (e.g., Inconel 625) exhibit excellent resistance to localized corrosion and stress corrosion cracking in seawater environments, and can withstand high-concentration chloride brine at temperatures up to 120°C. They are widely used in brine heaters and high-temperature heat transfer tubes in multi-stage flash (MSF) and low-temperature multi-effect distillation (MED) desalination systems.

Marine Engineering: Subsea Pipelines

Subsea pipelines are long-term exposed to the splash zone and full immersion zone of seawater, suffering from combined corrosion caused by high salinity, low temperature, and high pressure. Nickel alloys (e.g., Inconel 625), with their excellent resistance to seawater corrosion, fatigue, and impact, are widely used in the cladding and riser systems of subsea pipelines. They effectively resist pitting and stress corrosion cracking caused by high-concentration chlorides, ensuring the long-term reliability of subsea pipelines in harsh marine environments.
